Agatash is a welcoming Indigenous community in Cuyuni-Mazaruni (Region 7). It was named after a bird and sits on the left bank of the great Essequibo River about 5 km south of wonderful Bartica. Agatash is home to 800 residents who are beneficiaries of G$ 24 million from Guyana’s carbon credit revenue through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2023. The people of Agatash opted to use their money to finance and implement 9 important projects to enhance their quality of life and improve their community. The graph below depicts the investment areas for the projects

Developmental Projects

The residents of Agatash identified 2 projects each to bolster infrastructure, transportation, and recreation/culture in their community. They also opted to pursue 1 economic, 1 health, and 1 information technology communication (ICT) project. Details on all 9 of these projects are presented below.

Regarding infrastructure, Agatash built a community bond (storage facility) to protect assets such as a tractor and a minibus. Also, the community is in the process of building a centre that will provide an ideal space to host various meetings and earn rental income for the community development council (CDC) to finance other endeavours

To improve land and water transportation, members of the community acquired a minibus that mainly serves students, and a new engine boat plus an engine for a former paddle boat to aid residents of Sakaralla Bay

All residents and visitors of Agatash can now relax and have more fun because of the establishment of a recreational area in the community. This would further enhance the community’s previously expanded heritage celebrations.

Additionally, for the community’s economic, health, and information technology communication (ICT) projects, the following were done: the completion of electrical, plumbing, and auxiliary works for small businesses; the construction of a public sanitary block; and the installation of air conditioning at the community's ICT hub, respectively

What do residents have to say?

“From its construction phase, the community centre project provided many Agatash youths with an opportunity to earn and develop their skills in a lucrative field. In the future, apart from hosting meetings and functions, the structure will have sections for business, learning and training. This centre will be one of the most important buildings for the further development of Agatash.” – Mr Joesph David Allen, Contractor

“I have a small chicken and chips business that I operate in the evenings. The electricity I received from the carbon credits is helping me a lot. Before I had to buy ice daily and use a cooler for drinks, but now I have a fridge and other appliances that save me time and money. The electricity also allows me to have better lighting and music that attracts more customers. Business is booming since this project. Also, everyone in this area greatly benefits from the sanitary block” – Ms Salome Tracey

“The children go to Nursery School in the neighbouring community (Dagg Point), which is a far walk for them. The LCDS minibus allows the kids to go to school easily, early, regularly, and safely. It is also how I make a living to maintain myself and my family. The LCDS is really helping everyone a lot.” – Mr Deon Glaz

Before the LCDS boat and engine, I had to spend most of my day paddling in rough Essequibo waters back and forth to take my children to school. Now they reach to school quickly and easily and I save a lot of time which I use to do work and earn more money for me and my children.” – Ms Jennifer Bachus
