The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Guyana, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture organisation (FAO), is hosting a two- day workshop, focusing on mainstreaming Disaster Risk Management/Disaster Risk Reduction (DRM/DRR) in the local agriculture sector.

A group of extension and field officers representing various stakeholder ministries and agencies are participating in the workshop at the Cara Lodge Suites.

Guyana is among 10 countries that will be benefitting from a climate change adaptation programme that will be funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

The agency, in collaboration with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) is financing the programme that seeks to tackle climate change challenges in Eastern and Southern Caribbean countries.

Head of the Office of Climate Change, Janelle Christian told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that in January, consultation meetings were hosted to discuss the way forward for Guyana with agencies from the agricultural sector, development partners, Civil Defence Commission (CDC) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

Guyana is crafting a national climate change policy with assistance from the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB).

Head of the Office of Climate Change, Janelle Christian, said the policy will ensure that there is collective action to mainstream climate change mitigation efforts across all sectors. Christian explained that her office has been in discussions with the CDB for several months, on the policy.

Georgetown, Guyana – (February 1, 2017) President David Granger, today, said that as Guyana moves closer to fully implementing its ‘Green’ Economy Action Plan, it will look to the Swiss Confederation for its support, guidance and expertise in this field. The President was at the time speaking at the Accreditation Ceremony for the new non-resident Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to Guyana, Mr. Didier Chassot, which was held at State House. Ambassador Chassot will be based in Venezuela.
